In a continuing series of brass 1/87th scale models of some of the worlds ultra machines Classic Construction Models (CCM) has announced production of “Brutus” the Bucyrus-Erie 1850-B mining shovel.

THE MACHINE:

The 1850-B was built on site in Hallowell Kansas USA starting in June of 1962. It took 150 railcars to deliver the vast amount of components needed to assemble this monster. Designed for the coal fields at Mine #19 for the Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Company assembly of the machine took 11 months to complete. Brutus was 160 feet high and weighed 11 million pounds. The counterweight ballast tanks alone located on the back side of the machine weighed an astonishing 1.7 million pounds!

When finished the design allowed for the 90 cubic yard bucket to dig 69 feet below ground level. The 150ton capacity of the bucket could fill three rail cars in one pass. The dump radius was 150 feet and it could work spoil piles up to 100 feet high. The BE 1850-B was an all-electric machine that required an outside AC source of 7,200 volts. The machine housed two 3,500 HP electric motors that ran 13 DC generators each linked to an accompanying DC motor that were located throughout the machine.

It was designed as a crawler machine that moved VIA eight 34 foot tracks assemblies mounted on four truck bolsters. Each track pad weighed over 1 ton.  The machine operated with just a 3 man crew.  An operator controlled all movements related to digging operations including swing and bucket functions, a ground man whom controlled all forward and reverse functions and an oil man that maintained the constant lubrication needed during operation.

The machine was on the job in  May 1963. However with a dwindling supply of coal in the mine combined the drop in coal commodity prices and the ever increasing price of electricity

“Brutus” became economically unfeasible to continue digging and a decision was made by the company to cease operations in April 1974.

We are forever grateful that the Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Company decided to preserve this unique machine rather than send it to the scrap heap. In 1984 it was officially donated to Big Brutus Inc. a non-profit organization to be the center piece of a museum dedicated to preserving this historical machine and highlighting the regions rich heritage. The museum and “Brutus” are located at 6509 NW 60th St West Mineral, KS 66782 USA.  The museum is open year round although hours vary with the season. They are closed Thanksgiving & Christmas Day. You can contact them at (USA Phone Number) 620-827-6177. West Mineral is approx. 150 miles south of Kansas City KS.

The Model:

Classic Construction Models will be producing a 1/87th scale all brass replica of this giant machine. The replica will stand approx. 22” tall and 30” long truly an impressive display of history in miniature. The machine evolved through a number of modifications throughout its working life so CCM decided to replicate how it looked on its very last day on the job. The model will incorporate many movable components including tracks and house rotation. Utilizing a series of self-locking drum hoists the model can be displayed at any point of a typical work cycle.

As with any of the CCM models this will be a museum quality replica down to the last detail. The model will be painted and decorated in the orange and black paint scheme as it stood in 1974.
